about

A new ZX Spectrum beeper music album that explores potential of the eponymous modern music engine. The engine actually features a few engines, ranging from recreating the finest beeper sounds of the past, to the newest developments in the field, that can be seamlessly switched at any time.

The music here has been composed in March 2022 - April 2023. It is a mix of a rad 1-bit riff driven punk rock and simple dance/pop melodic parts, inspired by the video game music of the 8-16 bit era.

All sounds here are generated by the Z80 CPU running at 3.5 MHz and played through an 1-bit speaker. It all powered by the Ear Shaver EX engine that features two voice polyphony and a sampled drum channel.

You can also download this compilation as a program and load it into your ZX Spectrum 48K: shiru.untergrund.net/files/zx/earshaver.zip

Music composed and sound engine programmed by Shiru. Thanks goes to Michael Batty, his iconic work in the Earth Shaker game highly influenced the sound here, and to Jonathan Smith and Martin Galway, the song Balls Of Steel is a homage to their finest work in the Ping Pong game, which ignited my interest to the beeper sound back in 1994.
